Top-Ten Things I Digged about 2007

Another year is over, and here are 10 things that I really liked about 2007.

10. The Apatow Clan

Everything these days are big budget, green screen, and elaborate sets. But Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann, Jonah Hill, Paul Rudd and Judd Apatow brought back a very traditional method of comedy.... good jokes. Knocked Up and Superbad not only permeated through the eyes of viewers but into the depths of pop culture.

9. J.K. Rowling and Harry Potter
Yes I read Harry Potter. All seven books and I am a big fan of J.K. Rowling's written fantasy. But what makes me dig her is the culture she has created. We live in a media driven society where young people spend most of their free time playing video games, on the internet, and watching MTV. But whenever the next Harry Potter book came out kids of all ages dropped everything to get a 1000 page book. Getting people excited to read is a feat that is as amazing as near impossible. And every time I think about it it never fails to leave me incredulous.

8. Barry Bonds gets Busted
OK, I know he wasn't the only one that was exposed as a cheat. But just the arrogance at which he carried himself not only about himself but the records he broke. Hank Aaron's 755 is not only a baseball statistic, it transcends sports into issues of race, humility, and class. Barry Bonds does not represent that. Yes Barry you are not the only one who cheated, but you are in the position of breaking hallowed ground. I vote for the fattest asterisk Major League Baseball can find and cement it next to his name.

7. Korea's Developement
I take extreme pride in the fact that my parents immigrated here to the United States to live a better life. The irony now, is the economic and social development of South Korea has surpassed anyone's expectations. In early January Ban Ki-Moon became the new Secretary General of the U.N. There is a effort to stop foreign adoption because the country is no longer is a 'developing country'. South Korea won the bid to host the 2014 Asian Games. The Free Trade Agreement was a great success in Korean trade diplomacy between Washington and Seoul. Things done change, and quick.

6. Al Gore Winning the Nobel Peace Prize
With all the troubles of the world, death, and destruction its important to realize if we don't take care of the environment we wont have a place to kill each other. The Nobel Prize winner said it best when he stated: "The planet is in distress and all of the attention is on Paris Hilton. We have to ask ourselves what is going on here?"

5.Hip Hop is NOT Dead
I cant remember a better year for Hip Hop in my short lifetime. With legends such as Common, Talib Kweli, Jay-Z, Ghostface, Little Brother, ad Scarface releasing solid albums. Newcomers like Lupe Fiasco and Saigon making their mark on the industry. Underground rap rearing its talented voice with my album of the year Blu & Exile 'Below the Heavens' and the always solid Blue Scholar's 'Bayani' all coming out of the West Coast this year. And you know the South still producing all the anthems for the seasons and hits for the charts. Not to mention solid efforts by veterans, Kanye West, Fabolous, Beanie Sigel and Freeway all with solid LPs.

4. The Rutgers Women's Basketball Team.
Its sad that a certain asshole Disc Jockey overshadowed the fact that this team had an amazing Cinderella run in basketball terms. They upset Duke then LSU to advance to the Championship game before losing to the more talented Lady Vols. This story is enough to make it on the list but then these ladies demonstrated incredible class, poise, and intelligence in the way they handled themselves in the whole Don Imus situation. Not only did they sincerely accept a rather unsincere apology from Imus but they exemplified the polar opposite of the very definition of what a 'nappy headed hoe' is. Cheers ladies.

3. Golden State Warriors
Million dollar athletes diving for loose balls, running breathlessly up and down the court to viciously dunk it, and when they dont they launch 3 pointers. Just the way basketball should be played. With guys you cant help but root for, the ferocious Baron Davis leading the team, the unfairly stereotyped Stephen Jackson, the underdog Matt Barnes, and the hustling Monta Ellis. Not only the fact that upset the Mavericks to make NBA history, but just the way their arena explodes with every momentum swing their way. Just the hard nose way they play reminds me of the Knicks from the 90s with the tough point guard in Ward and Childs, the undersized front court players in Oakley and Johnson and the way the Garden would erupt during games, win or lose. SIGH*... i miss those days... anyway Golden State Warriors are probably the most fun team to watch. Last year and this year to come.

2. College Football Upsets
In an ironic twist I am a huge Michigan Fan. So the fact my season was over after the first game when they became the first Division-1 team to lose to a Division -II team in NCAA history, had a bittersweet taste as it was a prelude to the crazy season that would follow.

Stanford 24, No. 2 USC 23
They were 40 point underdogs. Not that fact alone but the dramatic fashion in which they won on a game winning fade to the front corner of the endzone. Did I mention they were 40 point underdogs?

Pittsburgh 13, No. 2 West Virginia 9
If West Virgina wins they play for the National Championship. But in this unexpected year Pat White goes down with injury and so does the their championship aspirations.

Colorado 27, No. 3 Oklahoma 24
Boise State was down by 3 scores in the second half. But they overcame that ad beat a more talented team with a last second field goal. Oh wait... did I say Boise State??? I meant Colorado... silly me, what made me think of Boise State in a game where Oklahoma was upset???

Syracuse 38, No. 18 Louisville 35
Syracuse -- a 36 1/2-point underdog -- ended Louisville's 20-game home-winning streak and completely exposed the horrendous defense that would haunt the Cardinals all season long. This astonishing triumph ended up being one of two wins for the '07 Orange.

Arkansas 50, No. 1 LSU 48
Following a heart-breaking, triple-overtime loss to Kentucky, LSU rolled off four straight wins to reclaim the No. 1 spot. Then it ran into Darren McFadden. This game almost cost them a chance to play for the Championship.

Illinois 28, No. 1 Ohio State 21
The top-ranked Buckeyes simply had no answer for Illinois QB Juice Williams. Williams -- who had struggled for much of the season prior to this game -- made big play after big play, burning Ohio State for four touchdown passes and 70 yards rushing.

1.Tony Dungy Wins a Superbowl
There was probably nothing more satisfying this year than watching that man be carried on the shoulders of his players to lift up the Lombardi Trophy. With the tragic event of his son's suicide still fresh on all our minds; the First black coach to win a Superbowl; his exemplary leadership and poise that permeates through all this players; and the fact he turned the worst franchise in NFL history in the Tampa Bay Bucs to only watch John Gruden win a Superbowl with HIS players; and finally the fact that he turned the Colts from a "finesse team" into a smashmouth team, on both offense and defense. A man that has every right to be revered in every aspect of the sport and life.

The Mitchell Report

Ok lemme say first that baseball is my first love. When cable was still a new technology, my clock radio was my best friend. On boring weekdays i would do my homework listen to 660 WFAN, with the late great Bob Murphy and Gary Cohen calling the games. I remember when Al Leiter would grunt his way through games throwing 175 pitches only getting through 6 innings.
Rey Ordonez sliding to backhand a one hopper in the hole and popping up and throwing the runner out. Or the Bob Murphy calling Piazza's home run... "it may go... it's GONE!!"... then giving us the happy recap.
But of Course Steroids has muddled all of this. You're gonna tell me my childhood hero Piazza might have taken steroids? NO way... not Piazza... but how do we know?
Now getting to the Mitchell Report, many pundits have said it was a success.
Really?
So they gave us names of people who allegedly have taken stories. Most of the names have not surprised anyone. Its he said, she said. Arent we supposed to move foward? Clean up the game? But no, Senator Mitchell has to go piss off the Player's Association, with name dropping with NO SIGNIFICANT EVIDENCE. None whatsoever, no blood test, no urine samples, nothing. Just the word of an ex-trainer. So whats the chances of the player's union agreeing to stiffer drug testing? The answer is none. Although I detest Clemens and everything he stands for what did this prove? He took steroids. He cheated. OK. Nolan Ryan may have cheated. Walter Johnson may have cheated. So what? I want a clean game from NOW ON. I don't care about the past. I really don't. Clean up the game for the future. Nobody is doing that. Giving us 90 names out of the possible 5,000 players who have passed through the game since the "steroid era"... thats only .018%....018%?!?!?!?! give me a freakin break Senator Mitchell.. you spent 28 million dollars to tell us Clemens and Tejada did 'roids? Get a stiff drug program in place Mr. Selig... so when Arod hits home run number 763 we wont need an asterisk... So when 12 year old kids argue whose better... Ryan Howard or Prince Fielder, they wont have to mention steroids... so when David Ortiz gives his Hall of Fame speech he can be inducted like the true hero he is on AND off the field... So true good guys like Andy Pettite wont make a bone head decisions that ruin their reputations... Please Mr. Selig... please...

7-year-old hero: Child shot protecting mom

Hit 6 times, Detroit girl lost an eye and remains in critical conditionSpecial education teacher Angela Lang holds a get-well scrapbook for Alexis Goggins, 7, a student at Detroit's Campbell Elementary School.

DETROIT - As the gunman was about to open fire, 7-year-old Alexis Goggins lunged from the back seat of the SUV and threw herself across her mom, crying, "Don't hurt my mother!"

Six bullets from the 9 mm handgun slammed into Alexis, one piercing her right eye. Two slugs hit her mother.

Alexis' mother pulled through. But two weeks later, Alexis lies in critical condition, blind in one eye. And to her classmates and many people in this city so depressingly familiar with violence, the little girl is a hero.

"She was trying to save me," her mother, Seliethia Parker, 30, told The Associated Press on Monday. "My baby is just an angel to her mother. I thought as the mother, I'd be saving my child. I never thought my daughter would be saving me."

Alexis has undergone three operations since the shooting, and her mother sits by her bedside at Children's Hospital of Michigan.

As for the mother, she was seriously wounded, with one slug grazing her head and the other entering her chest and stopping just short of an artery. But she was released from the hospital just a few days later.

Parker's former boyfriend, Calvin Tillie, a 29-year-old ex-convict on parole, was arrested in the shooting and charged with two counts of assault with intent to commit murder, along with other offenses. He could get life in prison.

Alexis is learning-disabled and lags behind other youngsters her age. As a result, police say it may never be known whether Alexis meant to shield her mother from the bullets with her body. But Parker said that if her daughter hadn't put herself in between, "I really don't know. We might have been dead."

Parker said she met Tillie earlier this year and called off the relationship after three months, but he had other ideas. "He was harassing me," she said. "He would constantly call my house, popping up in the middle of the night."

Shortly after midnight on Dec. 2, police say, Alexis and her mother climbed into their friend Aisha Ford's vehicle for a late night birthday get-together for Ford's mother. The girl got into the back seat, and her mother took the front passenger seat.

Tillie, who had been standing outside the house in the shadows despite the cold, jumped into the back of the SUV, next to Alexis, and forced Ford to drive at gunpoint for several harrowing minutes until the woman convinced him she needed to stop for gas, according to an account the women gave police.

Ford told police she tried to stall for time while pumping gas. As she and the station attendant called 911, several shots erupted from inside the vehicle. Police say the girl had jumped toward her mother in the front seat.

Parker bolted from the SUV, screaming. Officers found Alexis curled beneath the steering wheel in a pool of blood. Tillie was arrested at the scene.

His attorney, Kim Basen Michon, asked for a psychological evaluation for Tillie. The lawyer was on vacation and could not be reached for comment Monday.

In addition to losing her right eye, Alexis was shot in the chin and jaw. Several days after the shooting, the little girl, her face horribly swollen and wrapped in bandages, stirred and squeezed her mother's hand.

"She is doing much better," Parker said. "She opened up one eye. Everything seems to be going great."

In Alexis' special education classroom at Campbell Elementary School, her classmates have named a stuffed toy with pink ears "Hero."

"We didn't want Alexis' spot to be vacant, so she's got a sweet bear to sit in her place until she comes back," said her teacher, Angela Lang.

Alexis suffered a stroke before age 1 and has epilepsy. Her teacher showed off a journal revealing strides Alexis had made in writing over the past few months. What started as an illegible series of lines had evolved into distinct letters: A, L and E.

"I know she can do it. There's no stopping Alexis," said her mother's cousin, Tonya Blockett-Colbert. "It may take her a little longer now because of this. But she is a fighter."

Not Again

So yes, the New York Giants are probably my life frorm the time September starts til whenever the NFL season is over. I have suffered a lot of heartbreaks as fan of the Mets, Knicks and of course the Giants. We started the season 0-2 and over the last 11 games we were 9-2, okay been a little spoiled. But ever since our "great" QB Eli Manning came on to the team, we have a knack of breaking down late in the season. Two years ago, the 23-0 loss to the Panthers after a 11-5 season and last year the 6 in a row in the L column after a 5-2 start. Yes, you feel my pain but not to give Eli any credit, we have made it to the playoffs every year that he's been a starter and not to compare him to Peyton, Peyton did lose 3 straight first round games before winning one in the playoffs.
I still believe that the trade was worth it when we traded for Eli in 2004. He is better than Big Ben and Phillip Rivers. But watching last nights game, he had me a little worried. Eli never posted big numbers like his big brother, he doesnt have the ring that Big Ben has and he doesnt have the record that Rivers have. Eli seemed lost half the time in games and with two games left, we have the Bills in Buffalo and the 14-0 New England Patriots coming up. At 9-5, third best record in the NFC, you might think that I'll be happy but again like the two teams mentioned before we might end up 9-7 and have another typical NY Giants collapse. Again its Eli's third try in the playoffs (knock on wood) so I'll give him another break since it took Peyton four tries to get one win. Eli is our franchise and everything does lie on him. But patience is running out and all I want is one playoff win. Please Eli, PLEASE!

My Album of the Year

Whats up everyone, this is Long and here is my first post. So what is real Hip Hop? Is it dead like Nas said, Or is it really the materialistic, brainless lyrics that we are being fed? Well I found my Hip Hop heroes, and you will never see them on MTV or hear them on any radio stations. Maybe I am bias to them because the EMCEE is Flippino but seriously their beats are hot and lyrics are about serious shit. So check them out, they are called Blue Scholars, youtube them, facebook them, myspace them. Every song from their new album "Bayani" is probably the best Hip Hop album I've ever heard so just go check them out and you can thank me later. peace.

Lupe Fiasco The Cool Review...

Just a note, I am reviewing this album, but understand that I am a huge Lupe Fiasco fan and I evaluate Lupe against himself and his previous works, with the bulk of the comparison coming from his many mixtapes where if you followed this concept of "THE COOL" has been alive since Fahrenheit 115 part 1...

01. Baba Says Cool For Thought-
spoken word intro by Lupe's sister.... well done and articulate, but come on... its like the opening act at a concert before the main event... i really don't care... sorry
02. Free Chilly (featuring Sarah Green & Gemstones)
Gemstones comes out singing.... and by the way Gemstones has a amazing voice just something about it... and then Sarah Green chimes in... coupled with the beat this track has so much potential... u expect lupe to come out with a verse soon, but then the music tunes off and u realize it was just an interlude... i dont know, i was hugely disappointed... i feel as if this was a wasted opportunity for an amazing track...
03. Go Go Gadget Flow
Two tracks in still no lupe but he comes on in this track... and he brings it.. Lupe twisting.. he has that remarkable ability in rhyming at a blistering pace but his flow isnt affected... the beat seems to have trouble with keeping up with Lu at first but it blends after about the 10th bar... ehhh took me a while to really feel it, the hook needs getting used to, kinda annoying.... and yes Lupe we know your from Chi Town and that you think iChicago is the best thing since sliced bread...
04. The Coolest
now for the first chapter in the concept stage... and not to dick ride or to sound like a stan but... ABSOLUTE FIRE... try to catch the metaphors and its chock full of it, starting in the first 5 bars .. which is my favorite, he spits: "i love the seas and i love the shores, no love for no beach, baby thats law, but she doesnt see" so unnecessary but yet so fire ... a rare hip hop track where you get 3 verses... BUT two things that prevent this track from being a perfect one... first of all the Lil Wayne twist he gives to some of his rhymes, not feeling it... and Lupe prob has the worst hooks sometimes... but the repetition of "coolest nigga whhhaaat" did kinda grow on me... you'll prob press repeat a couple times before u let the album go on to the next track... if you only play this once then dont bother listening to the rest of the album...
05. Superstar (featuring Matthew Santos)
i really dont know what to say about this record... I really dont feel Santos' voice... Sarah Green or Gemstones would have been a better fit... but again i can respect the creativeness in this track... "... wanna believe my own hype, but it's too untrue..." Lu trying to sound humble although we all know he's a arrogant and prideful dude...
06. Paris, Tokyo

nice beat, nice flow, Lupe coming out singing... could do without the singing though... bunch of materialistic references on Lu's style that nobody else really understands, but its one of those things where he doesnt care what anyone else thinks... again respect
07. Hi-Definition (featuring Snoop Dogg & Pooh Bear)
ill be truthful i had no idea no pooh bear was... i only Pooh Bear i knew is Rich Boi's dead homie... I also had no idea why Snoop Dogg is on this track... Not feelin' track at all... but Lupe's does drop some gems on his verses.. too bad i cant say the same for snoop...
08. Gold Watch
Lupe talking about his uniqueness. Just him poking fun at what a rapper is supposed to be. Sick Flow, infectious beat... lots of dry humor and sarcasm you will miss if you dot pay attention...
09. Hip-Hop Saved My Life (featuring Nikki Jean)
ok to be honest at this point im severely disappointed with the album... the only cant miss track so far was 'The Coolest" but he released that track weeks ago so i already played it about 150 times... but thank god he goes back to the concept with this track... and its AMAZING... talking about the character Michael Young a young aspiring MC from Houston... Lu showcases his storytelling ability, not forcing anything... again he spins his style on this young rapper, not the typical story of gangbanging or crack dealing but as the title suggest Hip-Hop saving a life... not like the media outlook that Hip-hop is synonymous with crime and drugs... rather short track but he sets the scene for the rest of the album... "get his momma out the hood, put her some where in the woods....show his homies theres a way, other than that flippin' yay"
10. Intruder Alert (featuring Sarah Green)
dark song... rapes, drug addiction, life in third world countries... again Lu showcasing his amazing storytelling ability... the song title serves a definition used in multiple ways, and just Lu bring knowledge and his opinions on such issues. "he's checking water, making sure its safe enough for daughter to float across in the boat that he built, hopefully strong enough to support her, praying border patrol dont catch her, process then deport her, before she reach the shore of the land of the free where they feed you, treat you like equals, deceive you, stamp you and call you illegal..."
11. Streets On Fire
The second half of the album continues to prove that this is the better half. Again following the concept, speaking on the streets, finally only the second track so far that makes you hit replay... wont get into the lyrics but his third verse is utterly ridiculous... listen up...
12. Little Weapon (featuring Bishop G & Nikki Jean)

Back to back to hittin the repeat button. Amazing record. The opening verse is from "heat under the baby seat" from one of his mixtapes that escape my memory at this moment... the bars have frank truths about other societies that are unbelievable but true... "think you gangster, popped a few rounds, these kids come through and murder the whole town, sit back and smoke and watch it burn down...""... cant write they own names or read the words that are on their own graves..."
Bishop G also comes correct as he switches up the flow and talk about video game violence and the kids that play them and the irony in that and kids that tote guns in real life...
13. Gotta Eat
ok, Lu rapping from a cheeseburger's point of view. Now dont judge yet. This joint reminds of a mixtape track "twilight zone" just a song so out there like he got high and just started rapping.. crazy song, metaphors aplenty probably the most unique track since Nas' "Who killed it" on 'Hip-Hop is Dead' ... trust me u will press repeat...
14. Dumb It Down (featuring Gemstones & Graham Burris)
i wont even get into this song in detail... you prob already heard it... NEWSFLASH: Lupe Fiasco knows how to rap... and he can use big words... and intricate metaphors...
15. Hello/Goodbye (Uncool) (featuring UNKLE)
Again Lupe singing, not really feeling it but he pulls it off somewhat successfully...
16. The Die (featuring Gemstones)
The death of the cool... and Gemstones blesses Lu with a collab... his flow rivals lupe... but nevertheless amazing flow from both dudes, with Gemstones' twisting a lil bit overshadowing Lu's flow... good song that is part of the concept with Gemstones' character being envious of the "Cool" and the "cool" enventually dying...
17. Put You On Game
Lu finally talking about the Game... and this track is absolutely Vicious... not only in terms of the record itself but Lu has a violent twang to his voice in rapping... lyrics are crazy and dark... " one of the oldest and ancient-est of thangs, speak every single language on the planet, na mean?", "I taught them better than that, I taught them aim for the head, and hope they never come back, im glad your daddy gone and hope he never come back","I hope your bullet holes become mouths that say my name" "I hope you die in this trash, cant help it all i can do when i hear you crying is laugh". amazing amazing track... repeat 1833 times.. and thats real talk, the best track on this album...
18. Fighters (featuring Matthew Santos)
Another appearance by Mr. Santos... again not really feeling his style... "what you rapping about" basically the theme and couple of reminiscing lines about his fam... not a bad track from an artistic point of view... Lu's verses still have gems and the flow is still there and he says "now we have one more to go, LUPend" refernencing his desire to retire after his third album. ...ahem, ahem BS...
19. Go Baby (featuring Gemstones)
Track for the ladies... ehhh its aite, might grow you, the hook reminds me too much of Go Go Gadget Flow...

all in all this is the one of the best albums of the year with the hype notwithstanding... Food and Liquor went away from how he was rapping from his mixtape days, where his fan base came from, but THE COOL revisits that, its a must listen for any music fan just in general.
